Old Fort

The Old Fort
The old fort was built on February 7, 1854 by 25 men for protection against the Indians, and was completed in March 1854.
The fort enclosed one and a half acres of land with a gate on the west side, a post office in the south and a tithing office in the northwest corner.
The fort was built by men in military order and enclosed the homes of thirty nine families.
The walls were made of rock and were seven feet high, about two feet thick, forming the outer wall of the homes which were in the fort.
There is a plaque today where the fort once stood. The plaque is built of evenly matched cobblestones by Wilford and Dorsey Brienholt. Elliot and Roger Johnson donated the cement for the marker. W. E. Thorpe gave the dedicatory prayer for the ceremony and a talk was given by P.D. Jensen.
