The History
Historic Old West City Hall & Jail
The entrance to the city hall was raised and the inside had a tall, plastered ceiling. The entrance to the jail was separate with front and side entrances. And the lower floor contained two iron-barred jail cells. The structure is broadside-facing and mostly unaltered, containing six over six windows with “federal style lintel caps”quared limestone block building was likely built in the 1870's. The upper floor served as city hall, with a raised front entrance and tall plastered ceiling. The lower floor was the city jail and had its own entrance on the west side of the building. There were two iron-barred jail cells. Other than the front porch being altered the building is otherwise architecturally intact.
Most inmates were vagrants who didn't have a home or wandered from place to place looking for work or drunks from the train, who disturbed the neighbors. There is a story about the police arresting some young men for disobeying the curfew law and locking them up for a few hours to persuade them to be law abiding.
The building is currently a home which is rented out as an Airbnb. Iron bars are still on the windows, but the cells are now guest rooms. And the visitor entry with a study, bookshelves and a fireplace. The main floor has a kitchenette, dining area and living room.
