Clara Althera Mellor Hill

Clara Althera Mellor Hill was born on October 1, 1853 in Leicester, England. She died on January 9, 1921 in Ephraim, Utah. Her parents were James Mellor Sr. and Mary Ann Payne.

Clara and her family came to America when she was very young; she was only two and a half years old. They were a part of the 575 people who traveled in the Martin Handcart Company. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in the early fall and were sent to settle Springville. A few years after that, they moved to Fayette. Following the death of her mother, Clara cared for her father until his death. When either her son or her son-in-law left on a mission, she cared for their wives and took them into her home. She cared about helping those in need and her house was always open, despite her large family. Clara loved music and had a piano, organ, violin, and banjo in her home, encouraging her family to pick up music as well. Later on in her life, she had a stroke which limited her from doing many things.
